In 1952, in Benin, Pierre Verger was initiated to the cult of vodouns and made babalawo (Vodoo priest) . He then learned the secrets of the Yoruba medicine that was transmitted to him orally. For several years, he collected thousands of formulas and took notes on the use of plants, and the incantations accompanying these medicinal or magical recipes. This series of images is a tribute to Verger’s research. The pictures were made in the fetish market of Porto Novo, Benin, 2016.
